Why overhaul?

Propellers are the most highly stressed components on an aircraft. Manufacturers therefore specify maintenance intervals (every 5-6 years) to ensure safety and cost effective operation of the propellers. Only such regular maintenance and inspection ensure a long life and safe operation.

Even propellers with low operating hours or those stored within heated hangars are susceptible to deg-radation over calendar time. This is due to internal seal aging and loss/degradation of lubricants. Components within a propeller are usually protected by plating or paint.

However, through operation of the propeller, the protective surface can be damaged allowing unprotected components to corrode. Very often, this damage is not visible from the outside and can only be detected during a complete disassembly and overhaul at a manufacturer recommended propeller service facility. Our recommendation:

  • Follow the manufacturer's recommended TBO and calendar time limits
  • Maintain a propeller logbook for traceability of repair, servicing and overhaul events as well as flight times
  • Visit a manufacturer recommended service facility
